To help celebrate my birthday this year, both my mother and sister made the trip down from Chitown so we could hit it up proper. Despite one cancelled flight and two delays, there were able to haul ass from the airport to make it for Redd‘s second set this past Saturday. Edward and Linda joined the fray and good times – and mass quantities of alcohol – ensued. Then came the Broken Spoke…

Sunday focused around an outing to Gruene, Texas, where we soaked up some sun, plenty of beer (mostly by me) and took in the sounds of Paula Nelson (Willie Nelson’s daughter). Plenty of photos and video available in my private gallery.

Fred Cantu Dashboard Widget

Last night while watching NCIS there was a local news spot reminding everyone about the time slot move of Fred Cantu. What made this particular spot stand out to me was the fact that he (or perhaps someone at the station) has set up a live web cam because, well… I have no idea why. The point is that Uncle Fred has one.

There doesn’t seem to be much going on this morning but checking on a regular basis was really interfering with the work that I get paid to do. So I decided to take 20 minutes and whip up a Dashboard Widget that would show the latest web cam image and also refresh it every 30 seconds. If you are a Mac user, ~~check it out~~ as really cool things are happening. Like at first, there was a chair at his desk and then I checked back like 20 minutes later and it was gone!

UPDATE 1: The chair is now mysteriously back.
UPDATE 2: Uncle Fred says, “We’re excited about your widget!”

UPDATE 3: The promotion is over and his web cam is now offline. I have removed the download link but have left this post up for archiving purposes.

A Personal Call From Uncle Fred

If you know me real well then you are probably aware of my loyalty to local TV news anchor, Fred Cantu. And if you know that then it should come as no surprise that when my phone rang, and the caller ID read KEYE TV NEWS that, after I cried out in delight, I couldn’t pick up the phone fast enough. Sure enough, on the other end of the line was the deep, raspy voice of “Uncle Fred”.

After we exchanged greetings (his being pre-recorded) he asked me if I could do him a favor. “Of course”, I say. So he told me to press one on my phones key pad, which I eagerly did. Thanking me he said that it was time for us to begin. “Letâ€™s do this!”, I demanded.

A click and short pause later a new voice, that of a person who was not Fred, and also a woman, came on and stated “Question One: In your scho…”. Heart broken, I immediately hung up and a single tear rolled down my left cheek.
